Refining Your Concept

by Roger Bourke White Jr., copyright February 2017

First Story -- Baby Club

1. Write your concept

This is the year 2050. The goal is to show how lifestyles have changed in 2050 thanks to changing technology. This is part of an anthology of short stories about life in 2050. In this story Janalee, a professional woman, 30's, has decided it is time to have a baby, and she is going to join a baby club to do so -- in the 2050's baby clubs are more common for child raising than marriage is. This story chronicles her adventures in finding the right baby club, and the right DNA to mix with her's to make this bundle of joy.

2. Tell the Character Structure you choose for your story

The protagonist is a woman who is searching for the right choice that will determine how she lives her life in the future. There is a lot to research and a lot to decide upon.

3. Give one sentence on each of your lead characters.

Janalee is a young professional who has decided to add baby raising to her lifestyle mix.

Cynthia is Janalee's cyber muse who acts as a companion as well as house keeper.

4. What is the genre?

This is "day in the life" in a future time science fiction.

5. In one or two paragraphs, tell us how you see the character structure playing out in your story.

Janalee is comparison shopping. She is looking for the right baby club and the right DNA to mix with her's. The baby club choice depends on club members and club goals. The first one is too feminist. For DNA the questions are who's to start with and how much modification to buy -- the expense goes up and she has to deal with a lot of red-tape when she wants a lot of modification. One place for DNA she explores is boyfriend Robert. At first he declines to help out because he want to be involved in raising if his DNA is being used. The solution these two finally come up with is having Robert join an adjoining baby club. They aren't married but they are raising kids together.

Second Story -- Megan's Party Time

1. Write your concept

The year is 2050. Megan Silver is a TES lifestyler (necessity lifestyle) living with her parents. Her big interest is fashion designing and modeling in augmented reality (AR). There she plays a game called RunWayWild. In real life she gets by on Necessity Living -- living on what the government gives her and everyone else. With this she does lots of partying at RetroDisco where she is a hot dancer. There, coincidentally, she meets someone she plays with in RunWayWild, and they start meeting a lot in both worlds.

2. Tell the Character Structure you choose for your story

Megan Silver meets Anton Miller at a dance club. Coincidentally they know each other in an AR game both play. The hot question is hot much they should get to know each other in the real world? This is class-line crossing. Anton is ambitious class and Megan is necessity class.

3. Give one sentence on each of your lead characters.

Megan Sliver, 20, is a girl who likes to fashion design in AR and party hearty in real world. She is not ambitious so she lives on what the government provides.

Hilda-956 is Megan's cyber muse, who is purely virtual and basic in features, it is all Megan can afford.

Annabell Deloran, 20, is Megan's real-world girlfriend, also necessity lifestyler, and also into fashion and looking good.

Anton Miller, 40, is a shy, somewhat ambitious type in real world, he is a Hollywood style agent/producer in the RunWayWild game.

Miley Kardashian, 30, is an AR reality celebrity who is also a real person, and famous for hyper-dedicated promoting style.

4. What is the genre?

This is "day in the life" in a future time science fiction.

5. In one or two paragraphs, tell us how you see the character structure playing out in your story.

This is about Megan and her necessity class lifestyle. The goal is to explore how she lives, as versus how an ambitious class person lives their lifestyle. Her life centers on AR gaming and real world nightclub dancing and partying. Coincidentally, she meets a person she plays a lot with in AR in the real world at her night club. How should they relate in the real world? That's the heart of the story and drama.
