Traveling to the Elemental Plane of Fire is never easy for a human. The physical protections for traveling there are even less effective than those for Earth, Air and Water, and the plane itself seems to be somewhat aligned with the Outer Plane of Hell, so evil seeps readily into it.
The Djinn, among whom I have many friends, have told me that the common ancestors of the Djinn and Effreeti came from elsewhere to the Realm of Planes, our realm. When they came, some settled the Plane of Air, and others settled the Plane of Fire. At first the difference was meaningless to them, for the whole Realm of Planes was quite strange and different from their homeland. But with time they adapted to their new surroundings and those who moved to the Plane of Air became the Djinn while those who moved to the Plane of Fire and became Effreeti.
The differences in their adaptations grew with time, and the people of the two planes grew apart from each other. Now the Djinn and Effreeti consider themselves cousins of each other, not brothers who happen to live in different neighborhoods. Part of the reason for that change in feeling is that the Effreeti seem to have absorbed some of the evil of the plane -- they are as capricious as their cousins, but without their good nature. Yet, evil as they are, and harsh as the plane may be to me, it is there I have the best chance of finding a suitable intermediary for dealing with the formidable creature of my cave.
