The rally was a smashing success. It was Ned's high point as environmentalist activist. He revealed how lax security was by pointing out that he himself had penetrated the complex just last night and left a fake bomb in the control room. More hearings were called for, and the plant opening was delayed by six weeks.
Two weeks later came a commission report that did not make the news. It was about an undocumented change in a computer program in the process control section. The change could have blown the place sky-high if it had not been discovered. The problem was discovered during a routine diagnostic check, but that check had not been scheduled prior to the startup date planned before the delay caused by the rally. Who made the change and when it was made could never be uncovered. It was finally attributed to Mr. Murphy, and then buried because there was no one to point a finger at and hold responsible.
Ned conducted two more rallies that summer, but without Toby's counsel, they didn't come off with any zing. He decided to rest on his laurels; he moved back to Washington to work as a high-paid advocate.
Professor Thrushmore did find relics that were manufactured using Viking techniques, but with native materials. It was strong evidence to support his thesis. Based on this he would publish next year.
