Four days later, the good news was coming in from all sides:
First off, Johanne was doing fine. The fleet doctors had fixed him up with the acres of skin he needed, and he was about ready to take up some serious bar brawling again.
Second, Gunther had reported to the Mercs. Between his report and the arrival of the "Old Man", a compromise had been reached between the mercs and the fleet. The fleet would back off from mounting a rescue mission. Instead of doing anything, the fleet simply issued a stern warning to the planet that it would fully back up its people who were still on the ground.
Third, the Kull World Wide Tour had done a lot to distract the people from the Marlet Martyrdom. The world governments remained split on the issue of how to deal with the coming Space Age. The world governments did not take action against the governor or the province as he declared that the province would become "a window to the Stars, on an experimental basis." We were in. We had a franchise, and Azzeed had a woman to propose to.
And, fourth, Chin and I finally got some quality time together. We had found our ticket out. Now, all we had to do was stay alive to enjoy it. I had not forgotten Gunther's words to us, "You will not in the merc's anymore, Commander. You will have to watch your own back, because the people around you will all be traitors... by someone's definition."
Life down here is going to be fun, but it sure won't be easy.
