Later that evening they took Sarra. They found her slumped over the feast in a stupor. She had been poisoned at the feast, too. Right after the creature died I’d been given the antidote, and while it saved me it left me groggy for hours afterward, so I didn’t see Sarra denounced as a witch and thrown into the rekindled feast fire.
Whether or not Sarra’s spirit escaped, who can say?
Moma Farina became the new headwoman. She had the men search the village and Devil’s Rock thoroughly the next day but no sign of the creature was ever found. There was another feast where Moma declared me a village hero, and after that there was no problem convincing Rissa’s parents to let me marry her.
Maybe, not being alerted as mine had been, Sarra’s spirit didn’t get a chance to escape. But … have any of you been hearing spirits lately? Have you stopped to listen to them? If you do, watch out! You may get more than you bargain for.
The End
